velocity

Wayfinding for Urban Cyclists

Product and UIUX Design Concept
Graduation Thesis Project, 2022–2023

velocity is a haptic-visual wayfinding ecosystem for cyclists, including a mobile app and haptic gloves. Connected via Bluetooth, they optimise the wayfinding experience for urban cyclists.

velocity enables route planning, provides haptic and visual cues for turns and hazards, and allows real-time feedback on route conditions. It aims to be a reliable companion for safe and relaxed cycling in busy urban environments.

Research

Cycling through the city requires divided attention. Navigating, avoiding obstacles, and manoeuvring amid traffic and pedestrians demand vigilance.
The bustling sounds of traffic and construction overwhelm your senses, yet you cannot afford to lose focus—it's a matter of your own safety.

To communicate such contexts safely and unobtrusively, I explored designing a multimodal communication system.

I designed a system that communicates navigation and safety cues using simple binary haptic vocabulary, with a visual interface for quick reference to help cyclists assimilate easily. Additionally, enabling live route hazard reports during and after cycling trips were also explored to empower cyclists to contribute valuable information for enhanced route planning among fellow cyclists.
